RFP Basics

RFI (Request for Information)

A Request for Information (RFI) is a preliminary procurement document that organizations use to collect general information about products, services, or vendor capabilities. Unlike an RFP, an RFI does not commit the issuing organization to a purchase; instead, it helps them understand the market landscape and refine their requirements.

RFIs are typically issued early in the procurement cycle. They allow buyers to identify potential suppliers, understand available solutions, and determine whether their requirements are realistic before investing in a full RFP process.

Responding to an RFI is an opportunity for vendors to introduce their capabilities, demonstrate thought leadership, and position themselves favorably for the subsequent RFP. While RFI responses are usually less formal than RFP responses, they should still be thorough and professional.
